The 49ers have accepted a $12 million offer sheet from Detroit Lions tight end, who is an unrestricted free agency. He hasn’t joined the squad formally yet. To find out if the Detroit Lions will match the offer, we must now wait until the deadline of April 3.
Wright is most likely going to switch from blue and grey to red and gold. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area noted that the 49ers wouldn’t make such an offer unless they believed the Lions wouldn’t match it. Stated differently, the 49ers will not initiate negotiations with Detroit regarding a restricted free agent.
In essence, this represents an improvement. The player is a respectable blocker and a potential YAC monster with an average of 7.1 yards. George Kittle’s tight ends combined for four catches totaling forty-five yards. In other words, this provides the 49ers both the run game support they need and a plaything for a second tight end receiving threat.
However, it also begs the question of what has become of Cameron Latu, their 2023 tight end potential.In the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Latu was selected. While not a terrible grab, it was unimpressive. Although Latu was considered to be the best backup for George Kittle, he was placed on injured reserve after tearing his meniscus during the preseason.
Latu will return in 2024 to contend for a roster place, but it’s clear that Wright was added since there wasn’t much of a backup plan when Charlie Woerner left for the Atlanta Falcons. In addition to Latu, the 49ers selected Brayden Willis with a 7th round pick in the 2023 draft. Willis dressed for games, but that was about it because he only recorded one tackle and no receiving statistics.
Although there may have been an improvement at the tight end spot opposite George Kittle, it is disheartening that two picks from just a year ago would still be in the same positions. Do the two tight ends behind Wright worry you?
