One of the standouts of the San Francisco 49ers first preseason game against the Tennesee Titans was rookie guard Dominick Puni.
As you may know, Puni was handed a huge opportunity with all the O-line issues and reshufflings and he’s not missed a beat since. Saturday was his first NFL action against players that weren’t his teammates. And Puni dominated. He gave up a goose egg. A cool 0 pressures for Saturday. It’s fair to note his fellow linemen, Nick Zakelj and Colton McKivitz, also gave up 0 pressures. It’s a good start for the 49ers pass protection—and Puni as a rookie.
The 49ers pass protection has had so many issues over the years, and they have a long way to go, but last night was a step in the right direction. That usually leads to Puni giving up little in the sack department. There were 0 sacks as well for Puni per PFF. So the kid could play last night.
Puni doesn’t seem to be in love with the sack. Kyle Shanahan was happy too. In his own Kyle Shanahan manner, anyway. At his press conference following the game, Shanahan stated, “I didn’t get mad at him for anything.” That typically indicates that you had a strong performance.
Puni will have an opportunity to maintain the lead. In Week 2 of the preseason, the 49ers will host the New Orleans Saints. Another excellent test for the rookie will come if there are more starting defenders for him to push around.
