Out of all the 49ers’ players, Brandon Aiyuk is the most tradeable.
They would not incur any financial penalties and would not have to take on any dead salary cap money if they were to move him this offseason. Furthermore, the Houston Texans, led by former 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, would give them a first-round pick—possibly even pick no. 23—if they sell him before the draft. If Aiyuk is still available, the Texans look like the natural choice to sign him.
However, the 49ers would save a massive $10.4 million this season and retain their best weapon going forward, as well as Brock Purdy’s favorite receiver, if they decide to extend Aiyuk’s contract.
Just one year separates Aiyuk and Purdy, yet their chemistry is great. For many more years to come, they ought to play together. Because Purdy is so adept at overcoming zone coverage, the 49ers know that rival teams will use a lot of man-to-man coverage against them. To trade Aiyuk right now would be utterly absurd for the 49ers. However, given that he doesn’t get along well with head coach Kyle Shanahan and that Shanahan has biases, they might.
