Davante Adams has reportedly told the Las Vegas Raiders that he would prefer to be traded. Adams is one of the NFL’s most dominant wide receivers. According to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo on Tuesday, nothing is imminent, but Adams has laid “the groundwork for an eventual split.
The news comes after Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce liked an Instagram post that suggested Adams had played his last game with the team. “I haven’t heard from him [Pierce] … I don’t really know exactly what that’s all about,” Adams told reporter Kay Adams on her show “Up & Adams” on Wednesday.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed Tuesday they would “consider” Adams for a package that would include a second-round pick and additional compensation. Adams, 31, played two seasons of college football for the Fresno State Bulldogs before being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers.
On October 2, 2014, Adams scored his first NFL touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers – the legendary quarterback’s 200th career touchdown pass. As a rookie behind Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson, it took until the 2016 season for Adams to break out.
He was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2017 and then signed a four-year, $58 million contract extension with the Packers. He became Rodgers’ top receiver (and noted friend) and Adams led the league in receiving touchdowns in 2020.
During his eight-year tenure with the Packers, Adams only missed 13 games and was named to five Pro Bowls. In March 2022, the Packers placed a franchise tag on Adams but he immediately told the team he would not play under the franchise tag for the upcoming season.
He was then quickly traded to the Raiders in exchange for their 2022 first-round pick and second-round pick. He signed a five-year, $141.25 million deal with the Raiders, which made him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL at the time. The trade reunited him with his college quarterback, Derek Carr.
But Carr was released after 2022 after a dismal performance. With Jimmy Garoppolo as his quarterback in 2023, Adams finished with 100 receptions, 1,516 receiving yards (a Raiders franchise record), and 14 touchdowns – which led the league. But Garoppolo only played for one season in Las Vegas before the Raiders released him. Now catching passes from his third quarterback in less than three years – – Gardner Minshew – Adams has caught just 18 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown this season. He missed the Raiders’ 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 4 due to a hamstring injury. Las Vegas is currently 2-2
