Center Christian Koloko was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers to a two-way contract a few days ago. A second-round pick in 2022, Koloko had some promise as a rookie but was sidelined by a blood clot issue the previous season.
Koloko, 24, is a seven-footer who has an impressive 7-foot-5 wingspan. He has the potential to become a serviceable rim protector and a strong finisher at the rim, but he is very much a project player at this point. Although Koloko is now officially a member of the Lakers’ roster, he has yet to be cleared by the NBA to return to game action. But he told TMZ that he feels great and that his doctors feel he’s ready to play again.
Via TMZ: “I feel amazing,” the Cameroonian athlete said. “My doctors gave me the green light but now we’re just waiting on the NBA. We’re pretty optimistic. Hopefully, everything goes well.
On the other hand, he said he has talked to LeBron James and Anthony Davis and that he’s ready to help his new team. “I’m just gonna come in ready,” Koloko said, “Be ready to do whatever it takes to have the team win and that’s the goal — win!” The backup center spot is arguably the Lakers’ biggest roster weakness right now.
Jaxson Hayes, their main backup 5 last season, doesn’t always play with aggression and intensity, and big man Christian Wood will be out for at least the next several weeks after undergoing knee surgery.
