The oldest club in Wales, Wrexham AFC, was bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the end of 2020 for a mere $2.5 million. Even though the two owners aren’t huge soccer fans, they made the decision to devote time, resources, and money to turning a little-known team into a well-known international brand, and it has already paid off. With hundreds of new supporters and numerous cameras watching them as they rise up the English soccer tiers, the Red Dragons now have their sights set on the Championship, but getting there will be their hardest challenge to date. This is an explanation of how Wrexham AFC can go to the Championship.
In which league do Wrexham play? Wrexham’s 2024–2025 season will be in League One. The Red Dragons will play in the English football league’s third division for the first time since 2004. Only a few seasons prior, Wrexham had spent the previous fifteen years stranded in the National League. The team then gained promotion to League Two in the 2022–2023 season after finishing with 34 victories and 111 points.
The Red Dragons were back in the EFL at last. In the 2023–24 season, Wrexham did not dominate League Two as they had done the previous year in the National League, but they nevertheless finished second in the standings with 88 points, earning promotion to League One once more.
