Throughout the NFL Draft cycle, the Pittsburgh Steelers have targeted a variety of positions, giving offensive linemen, cornerbacks, and wide receivers priority over most other positions on the field. But going into Round 1, the league thinks it knows who the black and gold are going after.
According to NFL expert Tony Pauline, the Steelers plan to use their first-round selection to target Duke centre Graham Barton. That is following conversations with numerous league players who share the same viewpoint approximately one week prior to draft night.
“Speculation from people in the league familiar with the organisation is that Graham Barton of Duke will likely be the pick,” wrote Pauline. “The logic is straightforward: Barton is a centre in the NFL who excelled as an offensive tackle while playing for Duke. Because Barton can line up at any position, he is appealing to the Steelers as they need help at both spots.”
The Steelers spoke with Barton at the NFL Combine and sent Arthur Smith, their new offensive coordinator, to Duke’s Pro Day. They have stated repeatedly that they are happy with Nate Herbig starting at centre this season, but they have had enough experience with the centre class to give you hope that they will add to the position.Barton is regarded as the best player in the group and is climbing swiftly in the NFL Draft. He’ll probably be available at pick 20, and nothing should prevent the Steelers from selecting him if they believe he can make a significant impact on their offensive line.
