Luka Doncic should have won MVP this season, but all the evidence seems to indicate that the NBA stole the trophy from the Dallas Mavericks star. He should receive additional votes due to his extraordinary output and capacity to guide his team to a top-five seed in the competitive Western Conference.
But it seems like Nikola Jokic, who declared earlier in the season that Doncic “100%” deserved the top individual prize in the league, is headed for his third MVP in four years. The big man was superior in several advanced statistics and the Denver Nuggets won seven more games than the Mavs, but those factors appear to be more significant than the Slovenian sensation’s body of performance this season.
Even so, Doncic ought to come in second in the MVP rankings; nonetheless, it’s interesting to note that some voters have Oklahoma City Thunder player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander trailing Jokic.

In the MVP voting, Gilgeous-Alexander was ranked second by voters, including veteran sportswriter Bill Simmons. In a recent episode of his podcast, he shared his selections for the major end-of-season awards, arguing that the Canadian guard should be named MVP runner-up for steering the Thunder to the top seed in the Western Conference.
Despite admitting that Doncic is the superior player, The Ringer creator believes Gilgeous-Alexander has faced more challenges this season, stating on his podcast (at 34:54) that “I think he had a better regular season than Luka did because his job was harder.”I respectfully disagree.
Which of the rivals has a better supporting cast is still up for debate. Jalen Williams, a contender for Rookie of the Year, Chet Holmgren, and more supporting players are Oklahoma City’s assets. Conversely, Dallas’ roster includes some extremely good players, such as Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, Kyrie Irving, and Dereck Lively II, as well as a few hidden weapons that might prove to be important in the future.
It should be mentioned, too, that Doncic has had to cope with injuries sustained by teammates this season and a Mavs squad that had mismatched pieces prior to the trade deadline. With players that fit them better and a rotation that worked better, Dallas was able to produce a squad that scared opponents on both ends of the court.
Still, because of his leadership and versatile skill set, Luka has been the main driver of the Mavs’ late-season surge in the standings. It’s interesting to note that since Wilt Chamberlain controlled the NBA, the league has not witnessed consistently exceptional production.
