The relationship between new Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett and the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t work out. After just two turbulent seasons, Pickett—the hometown favorite and first-round choice of the Steelers—was released, and Russell Wilson and Justin Fields allowed the team to entirely rebuild their depth chart.
This week, in his first media appearance as an Eagle, Pickett discussed his departure from the Steelers, as well as the pivotal game from the previous season in which he allegedly declined to suit up as the team’s backup quarterback.
Pickett remarked, “I just thought it was time.” I wanted the opportunity to move on and advance my profession because I felt like it was time after what had happened.
Shortly after learning that the organization was signing Wilson as a free agent, Pickett allegedly requested a move. He probably took this action because he thought he wouldn’t have a chance to contend for the starting position. He is now a backup quarterback in Philadelphia, home to one of the top quarterbacks in the league in Jalen Hurts, after being demoted earlier.
“I handled it the way I should’ve handled it,” Pickett went on. The more that comes out about this situation, the more it sounds like Pickett quit on his team last season and felt entitled to his job back after it. I’m glad the Steelers didn’t feel that same way and he is clearly a guy who couldn’t handle the idea of an earned demotion.
