Ryan Clark blasts the Steelers for sticking with quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Until their problem is resolved, quarterback will continue to be the most talked about position in the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. It is impossible to predict when that will occur.

On Wednesday morning’s “Get Up,” ESPN commentator Ryan Clark, a former Steeler who is always talking, shared his thoughts on what it seems like the Steelers will be doing with Kenny Pickett when he joins the team in 2024.

They’re going to attempt to get an experienced player who can challenge Kenny Pickett. Someone they can compete impartially against as a veteran. And if Kenny Pickett prevails, they can declare at the start of the season, “Okay.” Whether it’s a Ryan Tannehill or Russell Wilson, we went out and attempted to get better at the position. Furthermore, Kenny Pickett was a better captain this year than they were. We can now trust the player we selected in the first round.

If they do all those actions, it will be very inappropriate in this case but on-brand for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Your squad will be dependent on a quarterback who is incapable of guiding them to the promised land. The corporation was founded on excellence, which explains why the Terrible Towel and the six Lombardis have significance. It is not going to be Kenny Pickett who leads you to the promised land of perfection. And if he isn’t, I think it’s time to make a change at that position.

In all honesty, nobody knows what Pickett is capable of doing when an experienced offensive coordinator is in charge of him. Despite his promise, he has had difficulty in certain crucial areas in the past. But it wouldn’t be quite fair to be too critical of the third-year quarterback until we see the bigger picture. It has taken years for many first-round signal-callers to mature, and others never do.

In 2024, Pickett might take the world by storm. However, the Steelers ought to have a backup plan ready in the form of this year’s free agency class or the draft in case he doesn’t. Though, as Kevin Colbert would later say, it was too little, too late. It would be unfortunate if they committed the same error repeatedly.
