For the Cleveland Browns, winning the Super Bowl is not just the aim, but also the purpose for why they were formed. The Browns have poured all of their money into the team, signed and traded for players they believed might help them win now, and selected with an eye toward the long term and potential.

Sadly, Cleveland fans have reason for hope when it comes to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is still only thirty years old, and head coach Andy Reid, who said he will be staying here. There are a total of four, two associated with the Browns and two with the two-time reigning Super Bowl champions.

Browns’ Roster
Despite losing starters left and right during the season, Cleveland finished 11-6 in 2023. The Browns easily might have finished with a 12-5 record if the Week 18 game had counted.

Every player on Cleveland’s roster is skilled. Though there is always room for growth, even the 26 free agents on the Browns are mostly interchangeable, with only two of them ranking in the top 100 in the league.

Only the return of OL Jack Conklin and RB Nick Chubb should significantly improve this strong team, which features a core group of young players who are still maturing.

Deshaun Watson
To be clear, these are considerations, not guarantees, that we have stated. In his final game of the season vs the Baltimore Ravens, Watson appeared to be regaining his former form. Earlier in the season, he had another fantastic outing against the Tennessee Titans.

A club needs an elite quarterback if they hope to defeat Mahomes and the Chiefs. While not having to be exceptional, the QB needs to be quite decent. This year, Brock Purdy came close to finishing the job, but he fell short.

Although Watson gave us hints that he might be able to revert to his previous form last year, fans should clearly be concerned about this. In the game against Kansas City, having a quarterback who can take over periods of the game will be crucial.

Important Chiefs players
The talk leading up to the Super Bowl was that Kansas City, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and a stronger defense, was superior to the San Francisco 49ers overall. The key to their defense is DL Chris Jones, just like it is for the Browns with DE Myles Garrett.

While Jones turns 30 this July, Kelce will be 35 early the following season.

Throughout the season, we witnessed a slowed-down version of one of the greatest tight ends ever, but Kelce was able to turn it on when it counted most. In addition to all the blocking he did as a tight end, he has over 900 receptions in his career.

Jones is younger, but he lifts more weights and plays a far more demanding position. In the Super Bowl, he was excellent once more, but how long can an inside player of his stature maintain dominance? Although we won’t rule out Jones maintaining his success, it is important to consider his age for the role.

Kansas City Free Agents
In relation to Jones, after the conclusion of this campaign, the defensive tackle will also be a free agent. Leading wide receiver L’Jarius Sneed, linebacker Willie Gary Jr., offensive tackle Donovan Smith, linebacker Drue Tranquill, safety Mike Edwards, and wide out Mecole Hardman are all ahead of him.

Most, including PFF, believe that Jones is the best free agent in this year’s class and that his new contract will bring in about $30 million annually. Sneed is anticipated to sign for a salary of more than $17 per season and is ranked very high among free agents.

Tyreek Hill, a wide receiver, was one of the Chiefs’ most valuable players, yet they still won back-to-back Super Bowls without him. It could be difficult to assemble the remainder of the team if Jones is lost or if a 30-year-old defensive lineman is committed to a big contract. Two of the top defensive players in the league, Jones and Sneed, might be lost in the same offseason, which would be very tough for Kansas City and easy for Cleveland and the rest of the AFC.

The Chiefs have positioned themselves in an uncommon position in sports: everyone expect them to win everything until they lose. Though the Browns are currently far from that discussion, there are a few things that Cleveland supporters may be optimistic about.
