Day, an NBA tradition honoring one of the most significant personalities in American history, took precedence over the actual game.

The Lakers have participated in the NBA’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations more than any other team, having participated in 34 of the 38 available holidays. With 38 games played, only the New York Knicks have more. James, who presently owns the fifth-highest point total ever in an MLK Day duel (48) from his matchup with the Houston Rockets last year, is undoubtedly aware of the significance of this honor.

James talked on Dr. King’s legacy in the US and what it means to him to play on the holiday.

Playing on MLK Day is always wonderful, according to James. “It is clear that the man’s legacy endures because of what he meant to society and what he means now. Seeing his family at the football game earlier today was awesome, in my opinion. It was great to see them during the coin toss.

I believe he was always preaching about how we should always strive to be better human beings. How might we be better? Simply put, how can any of us be better than the other, regardless of our race, color, size, or identity? In my opinion, he is a significant figure not just in America but globally as well. Obviously, his legacy endures long after his death. It seems to me that it never truly goes away, so having a day like this where I can play the sport I love and honor him at the same time is something I find really cool.

The Lakers still have a lot of work ahead of them, but on Monday night, they were able to celebrate one of the nation’s most significant historical personalities while enjoying a significant victory.
