Gamecocks Erect Magnificent Statue for Dawn Staley to Honor Her Legacy

In an emotional and historic moment for women’s college basketball, the University of South Carolina has unveiled a majestic statue honoring legendary head coach Dawn Staley, cementing her place as one of the greatest figures in the history of the Gamecocks program—and the sport at large.

The bronze statue, situated just outside Colonial Life Arena, depicts Staley in her signature coaching stance—clipboard in hand, eyes locked forward, symbolizing her unwavering leadership and competitive fire.

The statue was revealed in a special ceremony attended by university officials, current and former players, alumni, fans, and members of the media.

“This isn’t just a statue,” said university president Michael Amiridis during the unveiling. “It’s a symbol of excellence, resilience, and what it means to lead with vision and purpose.

Coach Staley didn’t just change our women’s basketball program—she transformed it into a national powerhouse.” Since taking the helm in 2008, Dawn Staley has guided the Gamecocks to unprecedented heights: multiple SEC championships, Final Four appearances, and two NCAA national titles (2017 and 2022).

Crafted by a team of renowned sculptors, the artwork stands over nine feet tall on a granite base engraved with the words: “Faith. Fight.

Finish. — Coach Dawn Staley” In her speech at the ceremony, Staley was visibly moved, thanking her players, staff, and fans for their support over the years. > “I never did this for statues or spotlights.

I did it for the young women who trusted me with their dreams,” she said. “But to stand here today, in front of this beautiful piece of work, it tells me our fight meant something—and will keep inspiring others long after I’m gone.” Former players from her championship teams spoke emotionally about the impact Staley had on their lives, not just as athletes, but as women.
