Pickleball, a paddle sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has been rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. In India, the sport has seen a remarkable surge, with over 50,000 players and more than 500 courts established across the country as of late 2024 . The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) has been instrumental in promoting the sport, organizing events such as the World Pickleball Championship in Mumbai, which attracted over 500 participants from 18 countries .
The IOC’s visit to New Delhi included attending the inaugural Pickleball Carnival at Sainik Farms, which featured over 100 players from various countries . This event highlighted the sport’s inclusivity and appeal across different age groups and skill levels
The AIPA has been proactive in advocating for pickleball’s inclusion in the Olympics, aiming for recognition by the Indian government and the International Federation of Pickleball. President Arvind Prabhoo expressed optimism, stating that while 2028 may be ambitious, the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane could be a more attainable target for the sport’s inclusion .
As the IOC continues to evaluate emerging sports, pickleball’s rapid growth and global appeal position it as a strong candidate for future Olympic consideration. The sport’s inclusion would not only enhance the diversity of the Olympic program but also engage a broader audience worldwide.
