The Boston Celtics squandered a 20-point advantage in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks, falling at home after hitting just 15 of their 60 three-point attempts and letting a 16-point halftime lead disappear in a disappointing loss.
Then in Game 2, the unthinkable happened again.
For the second straight game, Boston blew another 20-point lead and suffered a heartbreaking 91-90 defeat on their home floor. Despite controlling the game until the final 12 seconds, the Celtics now head to Madison Square Garden trailing 0-2 in the series, with their championship hopes hanging by a thread.
While that may sound bad, it’s actually worse than you may think. With 3:12 left in the third quarter, Boston was up by 20 points. From then on, they completely imploded, making just 5-of-28 (17.9%) field goals, 2-of-14 (14.3%) 3-points, and turning the ball over six times.
It’s a game that left Celtics fans distraught, and in particular, famed Boston sports fanatic Bill Simmons had something to say about it when the game was said and done. To lose one game in which you led by 20 points is tough, but to do it twice in a row is absolutely brutal. When you throw on top that you were at home for both games, and were among the biggest favorites in the league to win the NBA Title.
Now Boston will head to a Madison Square Garden environment that will be as raucous as you could imagine for Game 3 and Game 4, with their season on the line. If they can’t turn things around, this could be among the biggest collapses in franchise history
