After the rumors of teams trading up for quarterback Cam Ward, CBS Sports decided to make a new mock draft where that exact scenario happened.
What is not being talked about enough in that mock draft is the Denver Broncos securing their tight end of the future with their 20th pick.
CBS Sports’ mock draft has the Broncos taking Colston Loveland, the 6’5 245 245-pound tight end out of Michigan. Loveland had 56 catches for 582 yards and five touchdowns last season. This may sound subpar, but when you think about how much Michigan’s offense struggled this year, it is impressive.
The Wolverines had a horrendous quarterback play this year, and the fact that he was still able to produce this past season says a lot about him as a tight end. The Wolverines are also a run-heavy offense, so that makes it even more impressive.
Loveland is a terrific receiving threat that plays almost as if he is a slot wide receiver. He is a really good route runner and has really good speed for a tight end.
He struggles a little bit as a blocker, but GM George Paton was seen saying that they would rather have a receiving tight end that needs to learn blocking rather than a blocking tight end that needs to learn how to be a receiver.
Loveland has great hands and is one of those guys who has a mismatch on every play. He is too large for safeties to guard, but he has the speed and athleticism to be a problem for linebackers as well.
The Broncos could use Loveland as they only got 13 receptions out of their starting tight end last year, and it is a position they need to address this offseason. Loveland could be a perfect young target to go alongside Bo Nix this upcoming year .
