Following an altercation in the sprint race, Liam Lawson acknowledged that Fernando Alonso “screwed him” during United States Grand Prix qualification; nevertheless, both maintain that the incident is not more serious.
Lawson put up a strong fight against Alonso’s Aston Martin, who later called the Kiwi a “idiot” and questioned whether the pressure from his six-race run at RB was a contributing reason. Lawson fought over P16 in the sprint.
After the sprint, the two got into a heated argument in the parc ferme, where Lawson disclosed that Alonso had threatened to “screw him” in the upcoming qualifying session. The two-time world champion was in eighth place, while Lawson was already scheduled to start at the back of the field after switching power units.
Both drivers, but Lawson in particular, were eager to downplay the altercation.
Lawson told reporters, including RacingNews365, “I guess he kept his word when he said he would screw me.”
“I have no idea why he was so angry. I’m not sure what it is that made him act that way during our P16 race, but I hope he can move over it.
“I can see why he was furious because he had a really bad race, but I would have been penalized if I had done anything wrong.
“We don’t have a rivalry, we just had an incident in a race and hopefully we can get over it and move forward.”
