The Philadelphia 76ers were the big winners of this offseason and can consider themselves contenders going into the 2024-25 season.
The biggest reason behind that was the addition of Paul George, who signed a four-year, $212 million deal with the Sixers this summer. George will form a Big Three with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia, arguably the best trio in the entire league. He was always believed to be the 76ers’ top target going into the offseason and they got their man. The franchise made several other smart additions as well to build a Championship-level roster, at least on paper for the time being. George is from California though and the thought of remaining close to home certainly would have been an enticing one.
The Golden State Warriors were interested in signing him but could not agree a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. On the other hand, George’s father has admitted that he would have been open to the idea of his son making the switch to the Los Angeles Lakers.
In a recent appearance on Podcast P, George’s father said: “I was looking at ‘Okay, we’re gonna go next door then.’ But they already spent too much money. You know, we gonna still come down in the tunnel, just gonna be wearing a different color.” The Lakers never really looked to be in the running for George’s signature over the summer even though they could do with some strengthening if they want to contend for the Championship next season. At the end of the day, the 76ers were the best landing spot for George. Not only did he get a huge contract but a genuine chance to compete for a ring as well.
There are question marks over George’s ability to deliver in the post-season. It is now up to him to prove the doubters wrong in the City of Brotherly Love.
