In order to complete their 53-man roster before the 2024 regular season begins, the Detroit Lions have completed their last cuts. After losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game the previous season, the Lions were just one victory away from participating in the Super Bowl. This week, Detroit parted ways with a number of well-known players, including their seasoned quarterback.
Despite serving as quarterback Jared Goff’s backup for the majority of the preseason, veteran Nate Sudfeld has been dismissed by the Lions. Hendon Hooker will serve as the backup quarterback this season, the organization revealed.
The #Lions are releasing QB Nate Sudfeld, who has spent plenty of time as No. 2 QB. Now, it appears it’s Hendon Hooker who has won the job. Sudfeld has impressed plenty in practice (without a ton of game reps) and will find his way into a practice squad, at the least.
This spring, Sudfeld put in the most reps and pleased the coaches with his abilities. Many speculated that he was sitting out the last preseason game because Detroit wanted to keep him healthy and that he would definitely be included on the 53-man roster. But in an unexpected change of events, the squad chose to let him leave.
Detroit fans had mixed reactions to Sudfeld’s release, with some saying they would rather have Hooker, and some saying that Sudfeld deserves to have a spot on the roster. Here are some of the reactions to the release on social media.
Nate Sudfeld Career
The veteran quarterback has been in the league since 2017, starting his career with the Philadelphia Eagles before making the move to Detroit. Over the course of his entire career, Sudfeld has only amounted to 188 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception. While he hasn’t found his stride in the NFL yet, he will likely be a backup option for the rest of his career.
