Pat Surtain II, a cornerback with the Denver Broncos, is one of the best in the NFL. He was chosen as a 2022 All-Pro and is a two-time Pro Bowler.
The position of their other cornerback is significantly less assured. The Broncos’ depth chart lists 2023 third-round pick Riley Moss and 2022 fourth-round pick Damarri Mathis as co-starters.
However, the NFL Scouting Department at Bleacher Report feels that a trade for a different alternative is necessary. Emmanuel Forbes’s corner at Washington Commanders is the recommended objective.
Scouts for Bleacher Report stated on August 19 that “there are a lot of questions about the Broncos secondary heading into the season right now.” Denver should be keeping an eye on the league as teams get ready to trim their rosters to 53 players. “It would be worthwhile for the Broncos to get in touch with [Forbes] to find out the terms of a trade.”
The No. 16 overall pick of the 2023 draft, Forbes started six of his 14 games played as a rookie.
According to Pro Football Reference, Forbes had 38 total tackles at the end of the 2023 season, 11 pass deflections, one interception, and one forced fumble while allowing 60.7% completion on 61 targets faced. Forbes is on notice despite the investment made in him, his continuous success with the starters, and his 50% defensive snap share in his first campaign.
Bleacher Report cites remarks made by Sam Fortier of The Washington Post as justification for thinking that Forbes might be acquired for a reasonable price.
On August 13, Fortier stated on the “Trap or Dive Podcast,” “I think Forbes’ future with the team is very much in question even though he’s been taking a lot of starting reps.” “I thought it was noteworthy that, when we questioned [Commanders head coach] Dan Quinn about him today, Dan said, ‘Yeah, I would have wanted to see him come down with an interception instead of just a PBU [pass break-up] on that play over the sideline.
“I thought it was noteworthy that he kind of came out and challenged Emanuel in that way.” Forbes made a tremendous play early in the Commanders’ preseason game against the New York Jets, according to Fortier. However, Fortier thought Forbes had bad footwork and was tackled for a score.
Fortier remarked, “He has ball skills,” highlighting the importance placed on that skill set by the Commanders’ coaching staff. “I’m simply not sure if he can be as good of a player as he could be given his technique’s consistency. Therefore, if I were to place a wager, I would say that Michael Davis and Benjamin St. Juste are the two outside corners for Week 1 at this time. That is undoubtedly one of the team’s weaker position groups. However, I’m still not sure if Forbes fits into this roster’s long-term goals.
The Broncos have the luxury of essentially controlling one side of the field because to Surtain. Whoever is sitting across from him will therefore have a lot of targets to choose from. The nickelback position is similarly vacant, but Ja’Quan McMillian is the clear favorite.
Mathis allowed 74.4% completion on 39 targets, playing 16 games and making six starts for the Broncos in 2023. Moss, who the Broncos traded up to draft, saw one target in 23 defensive snaps across 14 games.
The Broncos also signed veteran Levi Wallace in free agency and selected Kris Abrams-Draine in the fifth round of the 2024 draft. They also have depth options like Tremon Smith. Trading for another corner could be viewed as a luxury rather than a necessity.
