The Cincinnati Reds have traded right-handed reliever Lucas Sims to the Boston Red Sox. This was first reported by Robert Murray of Fansided. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Reds will be getting back right-handed pitching prospect Ovis Portes.
Lucas Sims is set to be a free agent after the season. With the Reds only sort of, kind of in the playoff race, they seem to be moving guys who they believe they have a chance to replace internally this year who are also going to be gone at the end of the year. Sims had been the longest tenured Reds player, having debuted with the club in 2018 after being acquired from Atlanta. In parts of seven seasons with the Reds he had a 3.94 ERA in 210 games. This year he had pitched in 43 games for Cincinnati and had a 3.57 ERA in 35.1 innings.
But he had also walked 20 batters. Of his 22 inherited runners he allowed nine of them to score. That’s a 59% strand rate. For context, the league strand rate is 72%. Coming over in the trade is right-handed pitcher Ovis Portes.
The 19-year-old from Antigua and Barbuda has pitched in 11 games this season in the Red Sox farm system. He began his season in the complex league in Florida and pitched in four games there. But in early June he was promoted to Single-A Salem and he’s pitched in seven games there.
