Budda Baker, the Arizona Cardinals’ safety, will enter the final year of his contract this season, and ESPN’s Aaron Schatz proposed the Cardinals extend him before training camp begins. Baker requested a trade in February of last year, then again in April, after seeking to rework his four-year, $59 million contract extension inked in 2020. The contract was revised in July, and Baker received a wage boost in his last two years with the organization.
He has one year and $14.2 million remaining on his contract until 2024. Baker, 28, is a key member of the Cardinals’ defense, having been selected to five consecutive Pro Bowls despite having somewhat worse overall numbers last season (due in part to missing five games). His current contract expires after the 2024 season, and it would be beneficial for the Cardinals to lock him up until his early 30s.
Baker turned 28 in January and missed five games due to injury last season, the most he has missed in a single season. He recorded 87 tackles but no passes defensed or interceptions. Despite this, Baker was the only Cardinal nominated to the Pro Bowl last season. It was his fifth consecutive appearance in the event, and sixth overall. In seven seasons with the Cardinals, he has made 737 combined tackles, 526 solo tackles, 37 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, and 34 passes defensed. Baker was a three-time All-Pro selection.
