This news follows Cuban’s sale of his majority stake in the Mavericks to the Adelson family in November 2023, making Patrick Dumont the new governor of the team. Initially, it was reported that Cuban would retain control of basketball operations while Dumont and the Adelsons focused on the business side, including building a new arena for the Mavericks, a project Cuban has been interested in for years, according to Jasmyn Wimbish of CBS Sports.
Now, Nico Harrison, the team’s president of basketball operations and general manager, reports directly to Dumont instead of Cuban.
Although Cuban’s opinion will still carry some weight in roster decisions, he may no longer have the final say on trades, draft selections, or free agency signings, Wimbish writes. With Cuban stepping back, Harrison can now fully control basketball decisions. He has already made significant moves, such as trading for P.J. Washington and leading the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals.
