In the modern NBA, exchanging jerseys after a game has become standard procedure for players that respect one another. Superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks have done it on multiple occasions; nevertheless, that particular exchange was one-sided as Irving gave Dillon Brooks his jersey without receiving Brooks’ in return.
Grant Williams, a forward for the Mavericks who was acquired in a sign-and-trade with the Boston Celtics last summer, has received jerseys from a number of his colleagues, but none have made him feel as good as the one he received from LeBron James, the all-time leading scorer in the NBA and star of the Los Angeles Lakers.
There was a brief altercation between Williams and James during the Mavs’ season-opening 104-101 victory over the Lakers on November 22. James tried to push his way past Williams, but it was unsuccessful. Williams added in an exclusive Bleacher Report interview with Taylor Rooks on Wednesday, “Prior to that, we were in practice, and I think I was challenged in a way of saying like, ‘you’re a physical person, but I don’t think anybody fears you or is intimidated by you.'” “I’ve always believed that you should never back down from someone, regardless of their status or character. I’m prepared to stand up for myself or to be a guy who won’t back down.
Even though it appeared as though Williams and James were at odds at the time, there is mutual respect between them both. Williams has seen a few significant postseason moments in his previous two seasons in Boston, which has probably helped him earn more respect from players like James even though he is presently going through a difficult time in his debut season with the Mavericks.
