An NFL player gets honored for his performance both on and off the field with the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. The prize was first given out in 1970. In 1999, the Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, a Hall of Famer, inspired a new name for it. One player who has significantly improved his community is nominated by each team.
32 players are chosen as their team’s Man of the Year and qualify for the national honor, symbolizing the finest of the NFL’s dedication to charitable giving and community influence. Every year, the prize winner donates $250,000 to the charity of his choosing.
A donation of up to $55,000 to each of the 32 nominees’ preferred charities is given. All contributions are made possible by Nationwide and the NFL Foundation. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recipient for this season will be revealed live at NFL Honors on Thursday, February 8th at 9 PM Eastern on CBS.
