Mark Kingston, the baseball coach for South Carolina, was sacked early on Monday. During Monday’s SportsTalk radio program, D1Baseball managing editor Kendall Rogers discussed the subject with Phil Kornblut and Chris Burgin, as well as potential candidates for the Gamecocks’ next coach. Rogers is a nationally recognized writer who specializes in collegiate baseball and has knowledge of coaching searches and their operations. KR: The most important factor, in my opinion, is that, when considering the South Carolina program as a whole, it is undeniable that Mark Kingston led the Gamecocks to the postseason the previous season. Two years ago, they participated in a Super Regional. However, I don’t think anyone looking at South Carolina’s program would realize that it poses a constant danger to Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, and other institutions. Furthermore, I believe that if South Carolina has such a devoted fan base and such a ballpark in Founders Park, you don’t really feel like you’re endangering those programs or competing.

So, I think Ray kind of felt like it was necessary to make a move now because I think the time is right for them to go out and get a splashy name. The last go around, Mark wasn’t such a massive name. He was a successful coach, don’t get me wrong, but he was not a huge name. I think this go around that they think you can go out and land one of these so-called big fishes.
