There’s a new offensive weapon for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite his lackluster tenure as head coach, Arthur Smith is still regarded as one of the industry’s most esteemed offensive coordinators.
In Pittsburgh, he’ll have plenty to prove, some intriguing tools at his disposal, and plenty of opportunity to express his creativity. That’s the feeling of ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, at least. In an interview with SportsCenter, Fowler disclosed that the Steelers might use specific packages with Justin Fields, especially around the goal line.
Fields could presumably take Russell Wilson’s place to either scramble or toss the ball out of the shotgun: “Jeremy Fowler of ESPN stated during Sunday’s game that he has spoken to several teams who anticipate the Pittsburgh Steelers to get a little strange at the goal line with Justin Fields, possibly have a package or two for him ready to go where he can be a runner or a thrower out of the shotgun.”
This makes sense, and even while it’s not always the best idea to have two quarterbacks in the offense, this wouldn’t be the first instance. Although most rumors indicate that Fields would also get an opportunity to earn his keep on the football field, Russell Wilson is currently anticipated to start for them as their quarterback. If he were to be selected to start later in the season, that wouldn’t even be shocking. Fields’ mix of size, speed, and agility makes him a dangerous threat with his legs, especially in those goal-line scenarios. Wilson used to be one of the best scramblers in the game, but he’s past his prime. With Arthur Smith now in place, the Steelers should have a lot more offensive success in the upcoming season.
