The first player on this list is one who played well for Pittsburgh in his limited role the previous season. With just 55 total offensive snaps, he played no part in the Steelers offence. But the tight end was able to establish a place for himself on special teams. Williams showed a strong drive in every aspect of special teams play while recording six tackles. Williams was inches away from scoring on a blocked punt that rolled out of the end zone, but his hustle kept him from scoring a touchdown.
Williams’ prospects of making the squad will depend on the Steelers’ choice of whether to carry a backup blocking tight end or give special teams play more importance. They signed MyCole Pruitt, a former player for Arthur Smith who was a member of the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, in the offseason. Smith’s desire to run the ball as much as possible will make Pruitt’s exceptional blocking skills very useful.
But Pittsburgh already has a good blocking tight end in Darnell Washington. They may also be open to giving Williams a spot on the roster because they lost two key pieces of their special teams in the summer in James Pierre and Myles Boykin.
Trenton Thompson
Due to injuries sustained by their secondary players the previous season, the Steelers’ roster included a number of inexperienced safeties who saw excessive playing time. Trenton Thompson was the most productive player in the grab bag group. In addition to being a bigger-framed safety who can play in the box, he has demonstrated excellent playmaking skills. Before sustaining a season-ending injury, Thompson finished with 22 tackles, three passes defensed, and one interception in six games.
The Steelers could be secure after acquiring DeShon Elliott in free agency and having Demontae Kazee return from an injury. Elliott, Kazee, and Miles Killebrew—who will be retained for his special teams contributions—shall be joined by Minkah Fitzpatrick. Thompson will force them to make a difficult choice, even though they are unlikely to retain a fifth safety. He has a genuine chance of making the Steelers team because to his versatility and playmaking abilities from the previous season.
Fehoko Breiden Breiden Fehoko was not on the field at all during his 2023 season with the Steelers, whether he was on the active roster or the practice squad. Given Pittsburgh’s struggles all season long with stopping the run and lack of depth on the defensive line, it was unexpected that Fehoko never took a snap. Fehoko isn’t much of a pass rusher, but he can stuff the run with his nose tackle ability. Given the major doubts surrounding their defensive line, Pittsburgh may try to retain Fehoko because of his background. There are some of their other depth alternatives with very few or no NFL reps. Breiden Fehoko may not be a starting player every day, but he might have a strong training camp and earn a position as a vital depth player.
