Would the Warriors of Golden State make this trade? After a season in which he averaged a career-high 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game, Murray would surely benefit the Warriors. In addition, he made a career-high 7.1 three-pointers per game, shooting a respectable 36.3% from three-point range, giving hope for his potential as Curry’s shooting partner.
Whether Golden State thinks Murray can revert to his defensive peak from his early days with the San Antonio Spurs may determine a large portion of their assessment. Although Murray wouldn’t need to be the All-NBA defender he once was if Andrew Wiggins stayed, he’s still young enough to believe that he can. Kuminga would be difficult to give up, and maybe not something the Warriors could handle.
Considering the progress the 21-year-old Murray has shown over the last several months, are we even certain he would be worth more in a deal than Kuminga? Murray might still be worth more, but not enough to require the team to forfeit an unprotected first-round pick in addition.
Murray isn’t expected to elevate the Warriors to the top of the Western Conference, thus giving up Kuminga’s great potential wouldn’t be worth the trade. From an Atlanta standpoint, it’s quite improbable that Golden State will trade Kuminga for Kevon Looney and another potential first-round choice.
