Although they had great hopes going into the season, St. Louis hasn’t yet lived up to them. With an unexpected 15-22 record, the Cardinals have struggled and are currently in last place in the National League Central. St. Louis needs to make a swift turnaround because it is 2-8 in its previous 10 games.
It wouldn’t be stunning to see the Cardinals end up sellers ahead of the trade deadline later this summer if they carry over their previous season’s struggles. Despite being linked to trade rumours during the previous season, St. Louis decided to hold onto superstars Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. That might not turn out to be the case this season, though, should things not improve.
This season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post prepared a list of potential trade candidates, and among them was Arenado, who was connected to the Los Angeles Dodgers. “No one hates losing more, and the Cardinals are more than a year into their disastrous run, so he just might approve a trade,” Heyman stated. “The Dodgers aren’t in dire need of him but he might press for the move.
If Arenado leaves the Cardinals, it will be evident that they are willing to start over from scratch. That doesn’t appear to be the case right now, but if the club doesn’t start making changes, perhaps it will. Even still, it wouldn’t be entirely unexpected if Arenado were to be shifted.
