Enraged supporters have blasted the AFL for their perceived inconsistent application of double standards following the upholding of West Coast defender Tom Barrass’ one-game sentence on Wednesday.
The Eagles premiership player was given the option of a punishment for rough play after he tackled Fremantle veteran Michael Walters into the ground during the Western Derby’s last quarter.
Walter’s head struck the ball before the turf, but he recovered to score from the ensuing free-kick and finish the game without suffering any injuries.
Using the same “good guy” defence that helped Brisbane star Charlie Cameron get off a one-game suspension for doing the same thing to Demon Jake Lever, the Eagles contested the ruling at the AFL Tribunal on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, the AFL community was deeply offended and condemned Barrass’ bid when it failed.
The majority of fans flocked to the AFL’s Facebook page to denounce the judgement as “joke” and “appalling,” while another expressed that the sport was becoming difficult to watch due to the high calibre of officials both on and off the pitch.

Will Schofield, a defender for the West Coast Premiership, described it as a “complete embarrassment,” and several supporters pointed out bias.

Aleksandar Jordanoski added: “Eagles play Gold Coast, and AFL funds Gold Coast, so anything they can do to ensure GC win. Very simple maths here. The AFL is becoming a joke with their decisions.”
