Right now, the St. Louis Cardinals could use an offensive boost.
After a terrible 2023 year, St. Louis has seen some progress in the starting rotation, but the offence has regressed. The failing rotation was the primary reason for the Cardinals’ difficult 2023 season, although the offence was still effective.
That hasn’t happened yet this season. As a team, St. Louis is now ranked 26th in batting average (.221), 29th in home runs (16), 27th in hits (179), and 27th in runs scored (87).
Slugging prospect Luken Baker is one internal possibility who could make some sense for the Cardinals, who could use some additional help right now.
With the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, Baker has made 21 appearances so far this season. He has hit four home runs and driven in 17 runs. Even though his on-base percentage and hitting average haven’t been fantastic this season, he still offers a tonne of pop.
In 2021, the young hitter blasted 26 home runs and drove in 70 runs; in 2022, he launched 21 home runs and drove in 66 runs; and in 2023, he had 98 RBIs and crushed 33 home runs.
Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt of St. Louis is holding down the fort, but it may make sense to bring up Baker to support him and also to bat first occasionally.
Despite having a lot of skill, the Cardinals have struggled to establish a routine this season. Perhaps it is time to give Baker another go.
