At Love’s Field in Norman, Oklahoma (37-4, 14-3 Big 12) lost to BYU (22-18, 5-12) on Friday.
Following the Sooners’ defeat, these are the statements made by head coach Patty Gasso, graduate catcher Kinzie Hansen, and senior infielder Tiare Jennings:
Gasso’s reflections on the death
“To start with, BYU simply came in attacking and fearless, and they did an amazing job. They are tough outs and excellent batters. Our game wasn’t played today. Numerous things did not go as planned for us. A portion of them were mental errors, while others might have been the result of nervousness or excessive emotion. felt as though our dugout was filled with a great deal of emotion. I cannot denigrate BYU; they were exceptional.
We occasionally think that a hitch in our season is unavoidable. We’re going to be on a new level when this team rises to the occasion, which is what has both me nervous and excited.
Gasso on the pitching of OU
“Inadequate. We require fighters because we cannot depend on one arm. I’m not blaming anyone, but sometimes the expectations of this program make it difficult to play. The pitchers are attempting to be flawless, and striving for perfection will not lead to perfection. You will become frozen at the plate if you try to be perfect. All we need to do is catch the ball and adopt a “Let’s go” attitude. It doesn’t feel right because we’re trying to be too flawless with everything. All we need to do is have faith in our abilities and possess a gritted pitching style. We occasionally appear that way.

Hansen: “A sizable portion of us have never received a kick to the teeth before. This one hurts a lot. We experienced it last weekend as well, but what will we do differently moving forward? There are actually two options available to you. We frequently discuss how there isn’t really a choice if you want to be exceptional. Thus, it is now necessary for all of us to accept and follow that course. The main takeaway from this is to always look forward.
Jennings: “I think it’s going to be how I react, and I’m sort of excited because I’ve never felt this before. Will we truly commit to this team, or will the leadership end up failing? Assuming leadership roles, play freely, and continue to enjoy the game. As long as we continue to have fun and support one another, there’s not much more that can be asked of a team. Looking ahead, I believe that although this stinks, it will be really beneficial for us.
Gasso on the lessons the team can take away from this
At this level, you can’t win with subpar play, effort, or attitude. I believe our freshman possess grit, so I’m not concerned about them. I’m proud of them. Tonight, Pitchers were called upon by Coach Rocha. I’m coming to realize that we’re not tough enough. Although we are good, we are also not good at this moment. Is it possible for us to reverse this situation, make it happen tomorrow? When we awaken, we will assess our current situation.
What we’re discovering is that, as a team, we simply lack the components necessary to win everything at this time. That is just being truthful. This is not what it appears like, as (Tiare Jennings and Kinzie Hansen) and I both know. The good news is that we are aware of how it feels. The good news is that we have experience there and know how to get there.
