League Two leaders Stockport defeated relegation-threatened Colchester 2-1 in a hard-fought match to move within one point of promotion.
Ben Hinchcliffe’s save of Cameron McGeehan’s penalty kick allowed the team to win five straight games and move closer to promotion to League One. Nick Powell and Paddy Madden scored the goals on either side of McGeehan’s equaliser.
Early on, Stockport’s Tanto Olaofe shot towards the side net, but Colchester keeper Owen Goodman made a point-blank stop to keep Madden out.
Nick Powell gathered Antoni Sarcevic’s short corner and his optimistic attempt from nearly 25 yards somehow crept under Goodman and into the net to give Stockport a 31st-minute lead.
However, Colchester equalised in stoppage time of the first half thanks to a side-footed goal by McGeehan from Arthur Read’s corner on the line.
On the hour, Madden gave Stockport their lead again, scoring from two yards after Connor Lemonheigh-Evans had cleared Ethan Bristow’s cross back into his path.
After Tom Hooper was fouled in the area by Ethan Pye, Colchester had a great chance to equalise in the 67th minute, but Hinchliffe stopped McGeehan’s penalty kick as Stockport won their fifth straight.
