Luke McCaffrey, the son of former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey (1991–2003), and brother of standout running back Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers, made a Southside visit to the Steelers on Thursday. Max McCaffrey, who played for Duke, is another sibling of his. From 2016 to 2019, he rotated around the practice squads of several NFL clubs.
The youngest McCaffrey had an exciting college career, spending five seasons from 2019 to 23 playing a variety of positions for several colleges.
He played quarterback for two seasons at Nebraska, where he began his career. Despite playing in only four games in 2019, he managed to keep his redshirt, completing nine out of twelve passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
2020 was not his best season as a redshirt freshman. Adrian Martinez took his place at the top, but he still participated in seven games, two of which he started.
In those games, McCaffrey had a terrible performance, finishing 48 of his 76 throws (63.2%) for 466 yards with just one touchdown and six interceptions. His rushing totals were impressive for an athletic quarterback despite his terrible passing: 364 yards on the ground on 65 carries, 5.6 yards per rush, and three touchdowns.
