It seems that the Pittsburgh Steelers have the opportunity to make a trade to get Brandon Aiyuk, the top wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. According to a team insider, there’s a genuine possibility that a transaction will happen despite the circulating rumors and speculations.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac indicated in his weekly fan chat that a deal for Aiyuk might occur, but the compensation might stand in the way.
“Oh there’s a chance,” Dulac responded when asked if there’s a real possibility of a trade happening. “But it’s a lot to give up, especially when you have George Pickens.”
The Steelers have reportedly explored the possibility of acquiring Aiyuk, and are doing their due diligence on a wide receiver trade in general. After sending Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the team is looking at George Pickens, Calvin Austin and recently-signed Van Jefferson as their top wideouts on the roster.
Former Steeler Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle, along with perhaps a first-round pick, was proposed to Aiyuk by the organization.
Aiyuk will be earning $14 million this season as he approaches the last year of his current deal. He will be searching for a trade-and-sign agreement to secure a long-term contract with his next team at the age of 26.
With $15 million in salary space currently available, the Steelers would probably need to modify Aiyuk’s contract in order to offer themselves alternatives for the remainder of their squad and their final free agency moves.
