Before Major League Baseball revealed the Phillies’ Spring Breakout roster a few weeks ago, Preston Mattingly was asked a straightforward yet clear question.
Will Mick Abel take the field?
Mattingly grinned.
Assistant General Manager of Player Development for the Philadelphia Phillies, Mattingly, stated, “I anticipate a really competitive game.” “I’m not ready to raise our hand just yet. However, we might be able to arrange for Mick to pitch a couple innings.
From March 14–17, a brand-new four-day event called Spring Breakout will highlight baseball’s future stars. On March 16 at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida, a team of the Phillies’ best prospects will take on a team of the Tigers’ best prospects. Nineteen of the Phillies’ top thirty prospects are on the roster: Abel (ranked No. 2), Aidan Miller (ranked No. 3), Justin Crawford (ranked No. 4), Starlyn Caba (ranked No. 5), Devin Saltiban (ranked No. 7), Bryan Rincon (ranked No. 8), Eduardo Tait (ranked No. 9), and Gabriel Rincones (ranked No. 10).
Abel (ranked No. 49), Miller (ranked No. 61), and Crawford (ranked No. 77) are three of baseball’s top 100 prospects.
Since Miller, Crawford, and Abel were all formerly selected in the first round of the draft, Phillies supporters are generally familiar with them. However, there are a ton of lesser-known talents that are slated to play on March 16, including Tait, a 17-year-old catcher from Panama.
Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations for the Phillies, has brought up this guy on multiple occasions when questioned about players that other teams are requesting in deals. Mattingly stated that he can see why.
He declared, “I think every Phillies fan should be aware of him.” Let’s start with his approach to work. He’s a very bright young man. He’s still a kid, which is why I call him that. He can perhaps land a hit-power combo. Naturally, finding offense at the catching position is quite challenging. We therefore really admire a guy like that who puts in a lot of effort, is intelligent, and has the potential to strike out frequently in order to gain power.

Spring Breakout: What Is It? MLB A four-day event, Spring Breakout features Minor League Baseball’s current stars as the game’s future. The first-ever event will take place during Spring Training on March 14–17 at league venues in the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues. The top prospects from each MLB organization will field teams in a series of 16 exhibition games, establishing a new event on the baseball calendar that honors the future talent in our game.
