Blinksportsnews247Amid speculations that the Dallas Cowboys may release wide receiver Michael Gallup, the team has enabled him to begin pursuing a trade, per the Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins.
Although Gallup might be traded to a different team, Watkins pointed out that teams anticipate the Cowboys to cut him, which could make it harder to find a buyer given he might be available in a few weeks.
Gallup, who recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2019, has not exceeded 500 yards in any of the previous three seasons. In 2023, he had two touchdowns and 418 yards, which was a career low.
Following an injury-plagued 2021 season, Gallup’s two successful seasons in 2019 and 2020 earned him a five-year, $57.5 million contract with the Cowboys prior to the 2022 campaign. Gallup’s output has decreased since signing that deal, therefore it’s hard to justify his contract.
The Cowboys may save almost $9 million if they release Gallup, who is scheduled to have a $13.85 million salary cap hit in 2024 if they decide to stay onto him.
Even though Gallup will undoubtedly be released later this summer, he might be able to find a team willing to trade for him. In this case, Gallup would locate a place to land and the Cowboys may receive some compensation, so both parties could win.
Gallup will probably assess his trade market alternatives while he waits for free agency to start on March 13.
