Blinksportsnews247Two players stand out as strong Bengals alternatives according to ESPN’s Matt Bowen, who announced his top picks for all 50 of the NFL’s finest free agents this offseason: Tee Higgins and defensive lineman Justin Madubuike of the Ravens.
Due to DJ Reader’s contract expiring at the end of the previous season, Cincinnati had a significant defensive line vacancy.
“Look for the Ravens to make a strong play to retain Madubuike, who had a career-high 13 sacks in 2023,” Bowen stated. “However, I also think he would be a good fit in Cincinnati for a defense that needs to bolster its front seven’s pace and playmaking ability. Last season, the Bengals gave up a league-worst 6.0 yards per play. Madubuike possesses the first-step agility and foot quickness to go around obstacles and have an impact on the pocket.”
The former third-round pick, who had eight career sacks going into the 2023 season, flourished under Mike Macdonald’s scheme. He more than quadrupled his season-long career best in pressure in 2023 with 64.
Like Higgins, Madubuike is a strong candidate to be franchised, therefore it would be shocking if he were to become a free agent.
“If Higgins does make it to free agency, Carolina would also be a fantastic fit, as the Panthers need a WR1,” noted Bowen. “However, I have him sticking in Cincinnati under the franchise tag. With Ja’Marr Chase on the opposing side of the ball and a healthy Joe Burrow expected to return to the field at the beginning of 2024, this move might put the Bengals back in the running for the Super Bowl. Higgins had 24 touchdown receptions during his four seasons with Cincinnati.”
It is quite doubtful that Higgins would be retained and Madubuike will be added during this summer.
