Spurs lacked attackers who were willing to take on defenders, drag the defense out of shape, and demonstrate vision to open up space against a team that was sitting with a deep back five, holding their shape, and interfering with midfield building. You ask, what is the fix?
What about a few fresh hires?
Fabrizio Romano now comes in. During a recent interview on CaughtOffside’s The Debrief, the Italian journalist (may I call him that?) discussed Tottenham’s summer recruitment ambitions. The two candidates suggested are Wolves’ shining knight from the previous weekend’s match and Barcelona’s Raphinha, an excellent winger who seems to be a top priority for Spurs: Pedro Neto
The Spurs have two intriguing possibilities that have the potential to significantly increase the Lilywhites’ firepower. In particular, Raphinha is more of the final product; Romano notes that we are really interested in what he did at Leeds. With 22 goals and assists over the course of two seasons, he has been very good at Barcelona, and any deal to the Spurs would depend on the Blaugrana’s approval. I like to make fun of Barcelona’s financial situation, and it may have contributed to Raphinha’s listing; nevertheless, they also manage to hang onto players despite seemingly being unable to pay the salaries and keep adding players despite the possibility of La Liga punishments.
Thus, it’s far from likely that Barca would be open to giving up the Brazilian.
Regarding Neto, it’s funny that Spurs often go after opponents who do well against them (see: Moussa Sissoko), but this isn’t always the case in this instance; in fact, there have been persistent reports for some time now that Spurs are interested in the Portuguese forward. Romano affirms this, adding that Tottenham’s back office has long admired him as a player. If the price were right, Wolves might let go of Neto, but from Spurs’ point of view, he is the riskier option since, although he is still young and may have a greater ceiling than Raphinha, he is not as good at the moment and has a questionable injury history.
He can, however, make opposing defenses look foolish, as we all (sadly) witnessed on Saturday, and a style similar to Ange Postecoglou’s might truly unleash him as a player.
In any case, the support Ange is receiving for carrying out the Great Tottenham Rebuild is encouraging from these two links. As summer approaches, I’m sure more names will surface, but as of right now, no transfer has advanced (obviously). While their scouting squad is searching the leagues for more attacking talent, Spurs will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how both players perform for the remainder of the season. Nobody is moving.
