That’s probably a short sale to Japanese celebrity Shota Imanaga. Although he appears to be living up to the anticipation thus far during Spring Training, he is undoubtedly subordinate to the other players that were available.
Any updates on Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman are necessary to report, since the speculations about these guys are still being discussed endlessly.
It appears that a different team is giving signing Chapman considerable consideration this time around.
“Chappman might join the Mariners to take Eugenio Suarez’s starting third-base position, as the team has explored. Luis Urias and Josh Rojas, two utility infielders, will form a platoon for the Mariners at this position. From a defensive perspective, neither is thought to be the best choice, and their combined offensive output is questionable, according to Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.
Sounds like the Cubs’ current predicament.
To return to the Seattle Mariners’ point of view, the perennial Gold Glover would represent a significant improvement over their current roster.
They dealt Eugenio Suarez to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier in the summer in exchange for a minor league reliever and catcher.
Some may argue that the Mariners had no reason to trade the third baseman from the previous season if they were going to sign Chapman, but Chapman is a far better defensive player and, unlike Suarez, who hits a lot of strikeouts, has never had a season when his OPS+ is below average.
Divish said that there had been prior interest in the 30-year-old, mentioning that Seattle had attempted to trade for him while he was still with the Oakland Athletics.
Chicago, who is supposedly giving their young third baseman another go at the position, might not be too upset if Chapman ends up with the Mariners.
This suggests that they are most likely eliminated from the Chapman sweepstakes.
That might come back to bite them in 2024 if the third base position is still unsettled.
In any case, one of the Cubs’ possible targets has attracted another suitor, so he may soon be off the market and wearing a different uniform.
