On February 5, the Browns formally announced Dorsey’s hire. He replaces Alex Van Pelt, who was let go not long after the season concluded.
Dorsey talked extensively about Watson and his expectations for his $230 million quarterback at his first news conference.
With Deshaun being one of the best quarterbacks in the game, I’m very eager to work with this offense, Dorsey added. “The chance to actually go out there this season and assist him in proving that he is a top quarterback in this league who can function and lead our team to numerous victories in football.”
As he discussed Dorsey with Quincy Avery on the most recent edition of his show “QB Unplugged,” Watson is equally eager to get to know him.

Josh Allen and Cam Newton are two dual-threat quarterbacks whom Dorsey has coached in the past. Watson believes that would work nicely in his game.
“He was Cam Newton’s quarterback coach when he led them to the Super Bowl and won the MVP award. Furthermore, everyone is aware of Josh Allen’s actions in Buffalo. In the MVP [voting], I believe he placed second and third a few times,” Watson remarked. “I can’t wait to go out there and learn from Cleveland by simply getting the playbook.”
In order to be ready for the season, Watson is now recovering from a shoulder injury and exercising in Los Angeles. Watson has received positive feedback after speaking with a few former Bills players who were under Dorsey.
Watson stated, “I’m actually out here in Los Angeles training with a couple of guys that played in Buffalo.” “When I asked them about Ken, they said, ‘Man, this is so exciting.'” He want to lead the league in scoring, be the best offensive unit, and see everyone succeed.
Browns Fired Alex Van Pelt Due to Watson’s Letdown
In Cleveland, Watson’s first two seasons have been inconsistent. Because of injuries and a protracted ban, he has only appeared in 12 games. With the Browns, he has thrown for 2,217 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Watson’s lack of improvement inside the offense was a contributing factor in Van Pelt’s termination.
In a radio interview for the “Zolak & Bertrand” program, Breer stated, “The reason he was let go in Cleveland was because ownership and [chief strategy officer] Paul DePodesta, not [head coach] Kevin Stefanski, were frustrated with the progress Deshaun Watson has made.” “I don’t think the decision-makers truly understood how valuable Van Pelt was to that crew. When they dismissed him, the other employees on that team were shocked.
Van Pelt was able to immediately get a new position with the New England Patriots as their offensive coordinator.
The offensive reorganization of the Browns went beyond Van Pelt. Andy Dickerson, Tommy Rees, and Duce Staley will be the new offensive line, tight ends, and running backs coaches for the Browns in 2019. Watson is happy that the course has changed.
“The coaching staff has some firepower,” Watson remarked. “All we need to do now is teach, learn, and share; on Sunday, we must put it into practice.”
Despite still recovering from shoulder surgery, Watson stated he should be ready for training camp.
