TRADE: Browns set to announce the signature of Top Free-Agent.

In an effort to win—and win big—during their present window of contention, the Cleveland Browns will not relent in the summer.

That most likely means the Browns will want to match Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett with another excellent defensive end in one way or another. That position was held by Jadeveon Clowney for two years, and Za’Darius Smith did it for the previous season.

However, Smith will play in the upcoming season at the age of 32 and will be eligible for free agency in March, while Clowney has joined the division foe Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland would be better off looking for a younger, possibly less expensive candidate at the position than re-signing Smith. Chase Young of the San Francisco 49ers is one such player who will participate in his first Super Bowl this weekend.

On Tuesday, February 6, Irie Harris of Cleveland.com identified three free agents as the Browns’ most probable “low-risk, high-reward” targets in the upcoming draft. J.K. Dobbins, the running back for the Ravens, was first on the list. Next, there were two guys who will play for San Francisco in the Super Bowl.

The other two alternatives, linebacker Randy Gregory and edge rusher Chase Young, are presently training with San Francisco for Super Bowl LVIII. Following the big game, both will be free agents, according to Harris. Since his Pro Bowl rookie season in 2020, Young has been restricted by injuries, but he has been reliable ever since. This season, he tied his career high with 7.5 sacks across his games with Washington and San Francisco.

Young’s NFL career got off to a quick start in 2020 when he caused four fumbles and recorded 7.5 sacks, earning him the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. After that season, the Washington Commanders’ defense was also nominated for the Pro Bowl.

Over the course of the following two years, injuries plagued the defensive end, preventing him from participating in all but 12 regular-season games. With the Commanders opting not to use the $17.5 million fifth-year option on his rookie contract for the 2024 season, Young was almost a trade deadline prospect going into the previous season.

Young’s trade to the 49ers came about as a result of his strong play and ability to stay healthy during the first half of the season. According to Pro Football Reference, he tied his rookie record in the pressures (25), QB hits (15), and sacks (7.5) categories before the end of 2023.
