Blinksportsnews247Unexpectedly, the Browns dismissed coordinator Alex Van Pelt as well as three offensive coaches following a postseason in which the group produced with four different quarterbacks.
Terry Pluto, a sports analyst for Ideastream Public Media, stated that Van Pelt’s four-year stay in Cleveland is regarded as long for a coordinator. For instance, in his 17 seasons as head coach of the Steelers, Mike Tomlin has had five different offensive coordinators. In his sixteen years as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, John Harbaugh has gone through seven. While the other two were fired, two of them went on to become head coaches.
Pluto explained, “Basically, as an offensive coordinator, you’re probably going to move up or move out every three years.”
However, Pluto added, coordinators frequently land new positions immediately. Van Pelt, for instance, was brought on by the New England Patriots to serve as their offensive coordinator.
Pluto claimed that head coaches typically fire coordinators in order to maintain their positions.
Pluto recalled that last season, the Browns finished 7 and 10 with a poor defense. Instead of firing head coach Kevin Stefanski, the team fired the defensive coordinator and the special teams coach, and hired two new players.
The Browns appointed Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator following Van Pelt’s dismissal. Ten games into the previous season, he had been dismissed by Buffalo. Pluto stated that Dorsey was brought in to get quarterback Deshaun Watson performing at his best because Stefanski prefers to call his own plays during games.
“Deshaun Watson, I would have given him a B- or C+ this past year. For that kind of grade, you don’t make the guy the most paid quarterback in the NFL. You also give him a contract that prevents you from firing him. Pluto declared, “There is no trade clause; he has three more years guaranteed.”
Former NFL quarterback Dorsey was the Browns’ backup in 2006 and stayed with the organization until 2009. He has assisted in the development of quarterbacks Josh Allen in Buffalo and Cam Newton in Carolina as an NFL coordinator.
Pluto stated, “With both Allen and Newton, Dorsey really drew a lot of praise—he helped their accuracy in passing, along with… helping to design offenses to highlight these guys’ being athletic.”
Pluto thinks that dealing with Watson will be difficult for Dorsey.
“Deshaun Watson played in just one complete season in 2020. Deshaun Watson was a 2020 Pro Bowl quarterback; however, a lot has happened since then. However, Pluto stated that Dorsey’s primary responsibility is to work with Deshaun and improve his game. He should also brainstorm offensive concepts that Kevin Stefanski may implement to enhance Deshaun Watson’s appearance.
Pluto expressed doubt about Dorsey’s level of success.
“And it is unrelated to Ken Dorsey’s merits.” Your location has made you somewhat of a victim. I have no idea how skilled Ken Dorsey is. I really don’t, but I also know that he’s got Deshaun Watson as a really difficult challenge, and he works in a really strange position,” Pluto remarked.
