Kalvin Phillips is the one player whose name is currently associated more with Newcastle than the team that hires him.
It seems less and less probable that Newcastle will sign Phillips.
For months now, Newcastle and Phillips have been circling each other, and it seems as though the story is changing hourly from “done deal” to “not happening”.
Newcastle’s efforts to complete the transaction are being hindered by the onerous FFP regulations, as Manchester City demands a payment of approximately £7 million in addition to an obligation to purchase in order to complete the deal.
And if you thought that was difficult enough, The Northern Echo now says Tottenham is interested in the England midfield player.
Tottenham is thinking about making a bid for Phillips. “The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hierarchy is considering a number of options, and some senior figures are reportedly supporting his cause,” the statement reads.
Since Spurs sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for around £100 million, they won’t have to worry about FFP, which means that if they’re serious about making an offer, not much can stop them.
Although Newcastle’s conservative approach to the transfer market is likely the right one in the long run, it is getting incredibly annoying right now as we will keep missing out on players and it doesn’t feel like the appropriate game to be playing right now with all of the ailments we have.
