That is, if you interpret his and his wife’s most recent social media posts correctly.
It’s a terrific day to be a Longhorn!!,” the Big 12 Coach of the Year posted on X Thursday night. With a succinct message of her own, his wife Loreal Sarkisian joined in on the Texas pride as well. Fans might understandably assume that this is an affirmation of the program’s loyalty, even though nothing has been proven, amid rumors that Alabama may target Sarkisian to succeed Nick Saban.
He did, after all, play a major part in the Crimson Tide’s most recent national championship win, so he has deep links to Tuscaloosa. The former offensive coordinator started as an analyst and spent two stints total of three seasons with the team. In 2020, he was awarded the Broyles Award, which goes to the top college football assistant.
Though much has changed since then—Sarkisian is now in charge of his own program—he officially brought the Longhorns back to their former glory in 2023–24, leading them to a 12–2 record, a Big 12 championship, and their first appearance in the College Football Playoffs. Texas even declared its revitalization after a close loss to Washington.
It makes perfect sense, though, that Steve Sarkisian would prefer to stay in Austin and pass on Alabama, especially with star quarterback Quinn Ewers returning for the upcoming season and Arch manning waiting in the wings. Still, Texas football fans probably needed a hint that Sarkisian was returning, and they will be eagerly awaiting official word that the Longhorns will be marching into the SEC in the fall of 2024, ready to take on the Crimson Tide and all of their new opponents.
