Blinksportsnews247On Thursday night in Las Vegas, the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Boston Bruins 2-1 thanks to a goal by Alex Pietrangelo 46 seconds into overtime.
After Mark Stone crossed the ball, Pietrangelo completed an odd-man rush with a simple tip-in into an open right side of the net. It was his first goal in 27 games and his second of the season against the San Jose Sharks on November 10.
For Vegas, who won for just the third time in ten games, Logan Thompson made 32 saves and Jack Eichel scored and assisted.
Boston, which has now dropped three straight games, was led by Matt Grzelcyk’s goal in extra time. Jeremy Swayman made 23 saves in the end.
After a scoreless first two periods, Thompson and Swayman each stopped 18 shots. Then, at 7:01 of the third period, Eichel scored on a power play to give Vegas a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Marchessault’s throw into the low slot was deflected by him through Swayman’s pads.
It was Eichel’s 199th goal overall and his 19th goal of the current campaign. The goal also ended the Golden Knights’ 122:41 goal drought.
7:42 remained to tie the game for Boston. For his second goal of the year and first in twenty games, Grzelcyk blasted a left-point shot that deflected off the stick of Vegas defenseman Alec Martinez and went inside the near left post.After being stopped twice on breakaways in Monday’s 4-3 overtime defeat to Arizona, Boston had a chance to take the lead in the opening minute of play when David Pastrnak broke in free down the slot. But Thompson made a glove save to thwart the backhand attempt.
The Golden Knights, who failed on a short five-on-three power play near the end of the first period, saw both Eichel and Stone leave the game over a four-minute span in the second period.
Eichel limped back to the locker room following a check along the boards by his former Boston University teammate Grzelcyk but returned at the end of the period. Stone left hunched over in pain after taking a Hampus Lindholm clearing pass off his right hand but eventually returned in the third period and set up the game-winner in overtime.
