The medical examiner concluded after the autopsy that the Dorchester resident’s death was caused by acute intoxication as a result of the two medications’ combined effects. He was declared dead in an accident.
First responders declared the former professional hockey player dead at his home on August 23, the morning after he and his wife Kristen celebrated their son Beau’s second birthday with friends, family, and former teammates. At that point, foul play was not suspected.

While traveling to New Jersey for a memorial service for Jimmy during Friday’s Devils vs. Blackhawks game, she received the state medical examiner’s toxicology results.
Kevin addressed a crowded St. Ann’s Church in Dorchester on August 30, the day of his brother and best friend’s funeral, saying everyone is a better person for having known Jimmy because he taught us all “to be a better friend, a better brother, a better son, husband, and father.”
Jimmy has been remembered since his unexpected passing for his generosity, good humor, and capacity to impact others. Several NHL teams, including the Bruins as they begin the 2021–2022 season, have paid respect to him.
