Rooney won just two of his 15 Championship games as manager, causing the club to drop from sixth to twentieth place in the table.
Carl Robinson, the head coach of the first team, has also been fired.

Professional development coach Steve Spooner will lead in the interim until a permanent replacement is recruited, it has been revealed.
Despite an excellent start to the season, Rooney’s predecessor John Eustace was fired by Birmingham’s new owners in October, with the excuse that the team needed “a winning mentality” and “a culture of ambition.”
Rooney was named when Birmingham secured a play-off position for promotion after racking up 18 points from their first 11 Championship games.
But, Birmingham is only two spots above the drop zone and is facing a possible relegation battle as a result of a bad run of performances that has included nine league losses.
Despite off-field concerns regarding the club’s ownership, Eustace, 44, left Birmingham when they were sixth in the rankings after leading them to their highest point total since 2016. Birmingham escaped relegation during this campaign.
Having led Derby County for 19 months the last time, Rooney was unable to keep the team from being relegated to League One in 2022 after a 21-point deduction and nearly the whole 2021–2022 season was spent in administration.
The former forward for Everton and Manchester United also headed MLS team D.C. United for 15 months until resigning by mutual consent in October following their failure to make the playoffs.
