Before Yoshinobu Yamamoto signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, reports indicate that the Philadelphia Phillies were interested in him. The Phillies might be open to signing someone else now that that choice has been made. Although they won’t have the opportunity to sign a player with Yamamoto’s caliber, there are arms available who might improve Philadelphia as a squad.
The NY Post’s Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are interested in starting pitchers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery.
With a history of astute free-agency maneuvers, the Phillies are still in the running to sign another elite free-agent starter, such as Montgomery or Snell. Snell, the 2023 Cy Young winner, might be the piece the team is lacking going into 2024. The Phillies made a serious attempt to sign Yamamoto, and their presentation was highly praised. Although Philadelphia is in a terrific position, they may try to make any move to improve their team in light of the Dodgers’ recent actions.
Snell struck out 234 batters in 2023 while recording an ERA of 2.25 and WHIP of 1.19. Snell was very concerned about the 99 walks, which were by far the most of his career. Generally speaking, giving away free bases is not a winning strategy.
Last year, the elite lefty consistently managed to avoid problems. He probably won’t walk as many batters as he did in 2023, but even if he does, it’s difficult to see how he can stop runs in the same way. The Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series champion Montgomery was a major contributor to their success in the previous campaign. With the Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals, he recorded a 3.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 166 strikeouts in 188 2/3 innings pitched. Montgomery finished the postseason with a 3-1 record and a 2.90 ERA in 31 innings pitched.
These two guys would be positioned next to Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler at the top of the rotation. With this, they would have one of the strongest baseball rotations in the league, capable of competing against anyone.
